What is Community Wealth Building?
It is a people-centred approach to local economic development, which redirects wealth back into the local economy, and places control and benefits into the hands of local people.
This is something Sheffield Labour Councillors have long championed.
Our Ethical Procurement Policy maximises the Council’s ability to apply ethical standards to behaviour throughout its supply chain. This uses the money the Council spends to increase the social value and benefits for local people and businesses.
This means that companies the Council contracts with must share our desire to create a city economy that works for all – by paying their taxes, respecting workers’ rights and equal opportunities, and invest in good training and working conditions.
The economic benefits are clear – £80 million more was kept in the local economy in 2018/19, and more than half of the contracts the council awards now goes to local businesses.
But we want to go further – and want to know what Labour Members think!
We believe that now more than ever we need to continue pushing council polices which have a social value – including in doing everything we can to tackle the Climate Emergency and make Sheffield Carbon Neutral.
But we want to hear what Party Members think, and we’re hosting a workshop on Sunday 21 February.
Who will be there, and what to expect
Speaking at the event will be Council Leader Bob Johnson, Deputy Leader Terry Fox, and Olivia Blake MP.
The event will be chaired by Councillor Mark Jones.
The meeting will also include a presentation by CLES – a specialised ‘think-tank’ on local economies. You can read more about the work of CLES HERE.
The event will include breakout workshops for members to discuss and give their ideas.
