The Council’s Household Waste Recycling Centres are to open seven days a week, and for longer.

The sites in Deepcar and High Green currently both close for two days a week, however a Labour budget amendment secured additional resources to open these sites for longer.

From April 11^th all of the city’s Household Waste Recycling Centres will be open for 7 days a week and will be open for two hours a day longer, from tomorrow 9.30am – 5.30pm, during the Spring and Summer months.

Deputy Council Leader Julie Grocutt (Labour Councillor for Stocksbridge and Upper Don) stated that she was ‘delighted’ about plans to help give residents more access to the sites, which will also hopefully lead to less fly-tipping.

“It’s great news that Labour’s plan to open household waste recycling centres for seven days a week is now being enacted.

“In Deepcar, an area I represent, I know how busy the site can get and people need to access the site as quickly and easily as possible. By opening the sites longer this will also boost the overall recycling rates in the city.

“This is being delivered following a Labour amendment to the council budget last month. Disappointingly Liberal Democrat and Conservative councillors voted against it, but I’m delighted we managed to get this decision over the line”.

The news has been welcomed locally with Matthew Wilson, Labour’s Candidate for West Ecclesfield, saying:

“We know the demand to use recycling centres grows at this time of year, and we previously saw big queues at the High Green site. So it’s great news that the site will now also be openinng up on Wednesdays and Thursday as well, and for longer too.

“Driving up recycling rates, making services more accessible, and tackling fly-tipping has got to be an important activity for the council”.
